Found out through the great members of the Yahoo Rockhounds list that this is psilomelane, a form of manganese oxide.

What is this material?

Any sugegstions would be appreciated. It is very messy to cut, turning the water and hands black, but it takes an amazing polish. This cab has not been finished yet, though....
